Massachusetts Senator George F. Hoar signed this typed letter on United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary letterhead in 1899, telling the recipient how to find a rare book titled The Defense of Theodore Parker.
Typed letter signed "Geo F Hoar". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 8x10, on letterhead of the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. 5¼x2½ typed bio affixed near bottom edge with binder reinforcers. Worcester, Massachusetts, March 31, 1899. Addressed to John O. Winship, Esq. In full: "My dear Sir: What you understand to have been a paper issued by Parker is a book bound and of considerable size. It is en-titled The Defense of Theodore Parker. I do not know whether it is out of print. But your chance of getting it would be by application to some antiquarian bookseller, such as Little-field in Boston. I am faithfully yours,". Hoar (1826-1904), who served as a U. S. Representative (1869-1877) and Senator (1877-1904) from Massachusetts, was one of the 15 members of the Electoral Commission appointed by the Congress to decide the outcome of the Nov. 7, 1876 presidential election between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden. That year, he was also one of the managers appointed to conduct impeachment proceedings against ex-Secretary of War, William W. Belknap. An organizer of the Republican Party in his home state, Hoar was also the author of the Presidential Succession Act of 1886, the 1887 bill that repealed the Tenure of Office Act and much of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act (1890). Following the Spanish-American War, he became a leading opponent of imperialism, speaking out before the 1900 election on the dangers of the U.S. becoming involved in the world-wide political arena. Lightly toned and creased. Lightened in numerous places. Adhesive residue and paper loss along all edges and at all corners. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically. Otherwise in fine condition.
