A 9 3/4" tall deep clear-glass square-shaped COCA WINE antique bottle = COCAINE WINE bottle. This is a very early hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled-top, dating back to the 1800's.
This COCA Wine and Malt bottle originally contained a wine laced cocaine concoction that was said to be a healthful tonic and pick-me up beverage, back in the late 1800's. Back then people often concluded that coca plants, with their beans and leaves, were very rich in nutritional value as once consumed, the benefits were immediate. After downing a wine-glass full of Van Hauff's Coca Wine, a consumer instantly felt a boost of energy and good-cheer. It was also said to be beneficial as a brain tonic, and cure for all nervous afflictions, head-ache, neuralgia, hysteria, and melancholy (depression). This product did not get very far back then as once on the market it was recognized that it was not a nutritional tonic that made the consumer feel better, it was the stimulating effect of the cocaine from the Coca plant. It was an addictive drug as once the short term benefits wore off, instead of curing melancholy it brought on a much deeper melancholy that could only be satisfied by more and more use as the addiction set in. Not long after it was offered for sale it was either banned by officials or voluntarily pulled from the market, as this bottle is rare to find, check it out!
