The Auction:
This is a SPECIALIZED
set of five 2 cent definitive stamps Fine - VF and
Mint Never
Hinged. It contains
printing varieties for Scott number 1055* Thomas
Jefferson. The carmine rose side coils are
perf 10 vert.
*In
2015 Scott changed many Liberty catalogue
numbers after a half century. The
rationale is that the first variety
printed should retain the major number
1055. In this case wet stamps were
printed before dry so the catalogue
numbers needed to be scrambled. The minor
number 1055b now refers to the
common dry print
variety.
It will
take years for the number changes to
catch on within the philatelic community.
Many dealers will continue to use the
old numbers while some will switch to
the new numbers causing confusion. Rest
assured that our identification is
current and accurate.

The stamps are
from the Liberty Series
coil set which ran from 1954 to 1980.
The definitive regular issues were printed
first wet and reprinted later using a dry
process. Generally the wet prints have a
darker appearance and thinner paper. The wet printed stamps are
notoriously off centered because the wet
paper tended to stretch during production. We have included the extremely
scarce untagged small
hole printing from 1961 at a fraction of
the catalogue value. Scott does
not recognize separate catalogue numbers for
gum colors like brown or white.
We've
assembled the set for you and there is no guesswork. All stamps are
extremely fresh and guaranteed to be accurately
identified. Some of these beautiful
coils may have very fine centering. There is a 30%
premium for VF but we offer
better quality at our regular low price! If
you purchase 2 sets we will send pairs.
See below for magnified comparison
of hole sizes.
