Postal History

Interesting one page stampless folded letter written October 22, 1846 by Charles Cramer, a natural history librarian in St Petersburg, Russia and sent to Charles K. Dillaway, who worked at the Society of Natural History in Boston, Massachusetts.

Cramer writes about reciving volumes of natural history books from Dillaway.  He also references Dr. Asa Gray, considered the most important American botanist of the 19th century.

Here is an image of the Dillaway house in Roxbury, MA (from the Roxbury wikia website).  The house was built in 1750:

Postmark is a red Washington City (Washington DC) circular date stamp with a 10 cent red rate mark.   Looks like it was hand carried from Russia and then mailed in DC.  I would surmise that Cramer wrote several letters and would save on postage by having them hand carried.  In this case, he wrote the letter in October and it wasn't postmarked until two months later.
