Philippe Granat

Philippe Granat was born on 8^th May 1899 in Yekaterinoslavka (Dniepropetrovsk), Russia. Like many Jews, his parents fled Russia following the pogroms of the early 20th century and arrived in Paris in 1902 or 1903. Here he was to learn French, marry a French lady and fight for his adopted country during World War II.

Living for some time at Place de la Nation, Paris, Granat devoted himself to painting scenes of the locality as well as still life and portraits. However his idyll was to be shattered in 1939 with the outbreak of The Second World War. Granat was proud to serve as a Soldier 2^nd Class in the 5^th Army, though after disarmament in 1940 lived a very precarious existence at Combs-la-Ville, repeatedly evading the detection of the German occupiers.

Granat was a well respected artist during his lifetime, courting both advances from the Montmatre and Montparnasse set. In the exhibition book about Granat, Raymond Charmet describes a carefree life after World War II, painting scenes of The River Yerres near his beloved home at Combs-la-Ville. Being a qualified dentist gave him a very good income, this allowing the artist to exhibit his works- yet not being forced to sell any. Belvoir Fine Art are pleased to be able to offer nearly the entire atelier collection of Philippe Granat from the sale that was held in Paris in 2017. These have been hidden away from public view for years, they consist of Impressionist and Surrealist oils, watercolours and gouache.

Medium- Oils on canvas.

Condition- Very good, ready to hang, the odd light canvas indent in places.

Frame- Original delapidated frame offered free with the painting.

Signature- Lower left, sale stamps verso.
