The Mysteries Of Montreal: Being Recollections Of A Female Physician. By Charlotte Fuhrer. Kessinger Publishing. Softcover. 133 pages. Measures 9 1/4" x 7 1/2".

Charlotte Führer emigrated from Germany to the United States and then to Canada in 1859, where she practiced midwifery in Montreal for some thirty years. Her memoirs present an interesting view of sexual mores and the lives of working class women in mid- to late Victorian Canada. Of special note are the passages relating to the problem of illegitimacy.
