One important consideration when purchasing hooks is not just the overall size of the hook, but also the gauge or thickness of the wire itself. As hook sizes increase the hook gets thicker. This is important because you want to match the lb. test of line used (in addition to the power of the rod)to the gauge of the hook. Balanced tackle is key to correct performance not only for your enjoyment but the health and safety of the fish as well.
If your combo produces too much power on retrieve relative to your hooks ability to withstand that force it will bend open easily. In contrast if your outfit is under powered for your hook of choice you will have a difficult time setting the hook resulting in lost fish and unhappy fishing memories. As the hook size increases so to does the force required to set and hold that hook.
Often times a hook barb is not even required with a perfectly balanced combo applied skillfully. For eating, this does not apply. But for catch and release sport fishing barb-less hooks are much easier to remove which potentially can make the act of fishing more enjoyable. Barb-less hooks are much easier to set also because the width of the barb is removed, thereby piercing much more easily and smoothly.
