Item Description
Up for your consideration is an exceptionally rare set of 4 German collages, c. 1640 - 1675. They depict the four seasons, each depicting a young man and woman in period (and seasonal) dress. They are archivally framed, and measure 13 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches.
Each collage is a depiction of the season (with text in Latin, German, and French) with an etching in black, that has been embellished with various inlaid and painted (gouache) materials. These include dyed papers, silk fabrics, beads, metal, mother-of-pearl, gold leaf, and real gold threads. The mop and gold leaf are inlaid, as are other various decorations. Such "embellished" pieces were very labor intensive, and only made for a historically brief period of time in the mid-17th C., and then the technique was basically abandoned. Very few examples of these exist, and this is the complete set of four. All fabrics in the collage have been inspected, and are of the period.
The collages are in excellent period condition, free of rips, tears or significant losses. There is light wrinkling to each piece, but no creasing. They have evenly toned (browned), and it appears that some of the materials have reacted with the paper, causing it to turn white immediately around the perimeter of the embellishment. A few other portions have also have this whiteness, namely around the gold leaf border and around a portion of some of the figures. This appears to be the result of a prior cleaning. Some of the silk fabric has deteriorated, but this is minor and does not distract. Overall, these are as nice as one can reasonably expect. Please examine the photos.
Additionally
"Winter" is missing some silk cloth from the young boy's shirt.
The glass in the frame of "Winter" has been replaced. All others are framed with a much older glass, which is thinner and has tiny, almost unnoticeable bubbles in the glass.
