DESCRIPTION

The set comprises of:

Volume I: The Defensive, 1954, third impression of the first edition.

Volume II: The Period of Balance, 1956, first impression of the first edition.

VolumeIII/1: The Offensive Part 1: 1 June 1943-31 May 1944, 1960, first impression of the first edition.

Volume III/2: The Offensive Part II: 1 June 1944-14 August 1945, 1961, first impression of the first edition.

Profusely illustrated throughout each volume, with photographic plates, folding maps, and diagrammatic images.

This immense project was sub-divided into a number of areas to ease publication. The volumes were written to be read individually, rather than as a whole series. That inevitably lead to some duplication of coverage in the series, but in their respective introductions to their parts of the series, Sir Keith Hancock and Sir James Butler explain why the decision was taken: to eliminate the need to read more volumes than cover the particular part of the war effort desired to be studied.

Complete in the four separately bound volumes.
