Available in this sale is an amazing Leica Telyt-S 800mm f/6.3 lens with Leica-R mount. Developed by Leica for the Olympic Summer Games of 1972 in Munich, Germany, the Telyt-S 800mm f/6.3 was made available for order in 1973 and remained in the Leica catalog through 1992. This lens carries serial number 2500723 placing it’s manufacture in 1971 based on available internet serial number dating information. The lens assembles from five (5) component parts packaged in a custom made aluminum case. The case is unmarked but for a label showing the serial number of the lens housed inside the case.

From Dennis Laney’s “Leica Collector’s Guide 2nd Ed”:

“This lens was made possible by new glasses by which the three-element symmetrical single component design yields high contrast, resolution and colour differentiation with residual aberrations reduced to a minimum. The massive optic consists of two identical negative elements cemented each side of a positive one. The lens was issued for the 1972 Olympic Games and made generally available (to special order only) in 1973. It could be ordered with either a Visoflex bayonet or a Leica-R bayonet. The mount disassembles into five parts, that lock together with bayonet couplings. Focusing is by rack-and-pinion with a control wheel. The tube which attaches to the camera carries the preset diaphragm and a filter slot. The camera can be rotated for horizontal or vertical format. Two tripod sockets are provided, one at the point of balance and one at the front to provide extra stability. The carrying handle incorporates a gunsight type aiming device for rapid alignment on the subject, which would be difficult on the focusing screen with an angle of view of only 3º. The lens is supplied in a fitted aluminum case.”

This lens is in excellent used condition. Optically it is clear and clean. Cosmetically it shows normal use and as you can see from the photos has an area that is scratched. The glass, located in the front section of the lens, is free from marks that will affect image quality. The diaphragm, located in the rear tube section, is in excellent condition and performs smoothly. It’s many-bladed build creates a smooth edged circle at all stops.

This is an amazing lens quite different from most others available on the market today. It’s simple design is solidly built and will provide reliable service for years.
