FYI

The domestic canary, often simply known as the canary (Serinus canaria forma domestica), is a domesticated form of the wild canary, a small songbird in the finch family originating from the Macaronesian Islands (The Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands).

Canaries were first bred in captivity in the 17th century. They were brought over by Spanish sailors to Europe. This bird became expensive and fashionable to breeding in courts of Spanish and English kings. Monks started breeding them and only sold the males (which sing). This kept the birds in short supply and drove the price up. Eventually Italians obtained hens and were able to breed the birds themselves. This made them very popular and resulted in many breeds arising and the birds being bred all over Europe.

The same occurred in England. First the birds were only owned by the rich but eventually the local citizens started to breed them and, again, they became very popular. Many breeds arose through selective breeding, and they are still very popular today for their voices.

Typically, the domestic canary is kept as a popular cage and aviary bird. Given proper housing and care, a canary's lifespan ranges from 10 to 15 years.

In 1924 the association counts 24 members.
------------
Chronicle of the association
On Sunday, 11.11.1923 at 9.00 h , 11 colleagues met for the merger of the Canary Society Furtwangen and the surrounding area.
On this date, the chairman of the Kanarienuchtvereine Schwenningen has also appeared to report on statutes, etc.
The founding members were:
Wölfle Albert, Trenkle Wilhelm, Joos Johann, Dorer Alfred, Zirlewagen Heirich, Brown Josef, Müller Johann, Kirnerotto, Staude Ludwig, Schwabe and Steiert.
As chairman, A. Wölfle was elected, treasurer became W. Trenkle, and J. Joos became the secretary.
Agenda items were also forage procurement and purchase of good breeding material.
At the next meeting on November 20 , 1923 , an offer of four canaries was already available. The company Altmeier from Munich offered the birds.

On 24.11.1923 the membership fee was fixed at 20 Pfennig. Furthermore, an entrance fee of 1.00 marks was levied. The statutes were set up and the foot rings for the year 1924 ordered. As early as 29.12.1923, the breeders could be distributed to the breeders so that each breeder was equipped for the coming year.
In addition, it was decided that fodder procurement would be carried out through the association. In the month of December the membership fee was increased by 1 Pfennig to 21 Pfennig and the application was made to increase the contribution from January 1924 to 42 Pfennig. The contribution was collected monthly at the meetings.
Even then the mite plague was mentioned and countermeasures discussed. A box for the desulphurisation of the cages, or a petrol coating and scaling of the cages, was proposed.
At the beginning of 1924 people were already talking about the first bird show with the judge. Naturally, singing cages would have to be purchased for this purpose. There was talk of 60 - 80 pieces. The members had agreed to make the cages themselves free of charge. In the course of the year 90 singing cages were produced.
As early as 1924, the members discussed a connection to the Schwarzwald concentration camp in Schwenningen, and decided to vote with 6 yes and 1 no. The Württembergische Schwarzwald-Gau also offered singing lessons and explanations in Schwenningen.
Since the contribution to the Gau per member is 50 Pfennig, the association contribution had to be increased to 60 Pfennig. The breeding ring order now also ran over Schwenningen.
The first bird show with award and raffle was held at the Gasthaus Linde on 25. and 26. 12. 1924 . This inn was then located in Gerwigstrasse.
Each member was authorized to exhibit and submitted to the exhibition conditions. The birds had to be the property of the exhibitor and be brought and picked up. If birds are lost, they are remunerated by the association. The stand money was set at 1.50 Goldmark per collection.
A-Canaries, B-Canaries, C-Canaries, General Class, Self-Breeding, Fished, Locals and Foreign Birds can be exhibited. The winners' prizes consist of diplomas and donated honorary prizes. The stand money is also used for honorary prizes.
For the visit of the exhibition adults had to pay 20 Pfennig and children 10 Pfennig. By comparison, a fresh egg cost about 15 pfennigs at the time.
At this first bird show, 14 collections, including 8 Kol. Allgemeine Klasse and 6 Kol. Selbstzucht, were exhibited.
The evaluation of the birds took Mrs. Bader from Rottweil. In the young breed class, Müller Johann and Braun Josef won 294 points each. In the general class Joos Johann won with 303 points.
The winners were distributed as follows:
First prizes of 285 - 303 points = diploma in tasteful execution as well as 6.00 Mark.
Second prize of 243 - 273 points = diploma in smaller format as well as 5,00 Mark.
Third prizes of 162 - 198 points = diploma and 4.00 marks.
These prices were approved and approved by the local administration. The association received 20.00 Marks from the city as a gift.
In the year 1924, total revenues of 604.52 marks were recorded, with expenditures of 416.79 marks. The association was thus able to start the new business year 1925 with a credit of 187.73 marks.
