The Oblong, an important and controversial tract of land in early New York State, once formed the eastern boundary of the Hudson Valley. During the settlement of the Oblong and neighboring patents, the Hudson River carried from New York City to frontier towns the needed resources of a growing America. The lives and labors spent between this peaceful Quaker farmland and the bustling river traffic created a fascinating assortment of sites and structures of historic significance. In this book, the regional photography of Harry Wirtz has captured what remains of the lives of tenant farmers and rich industrialists, pious deacons and boisterous drovers, who lived in the area that lies between the Oblong and the Hudson.
