DESCRIPTION

In 1790 Hogg found work as a shepherd at Blackhouse Farm in the Yarrow valley in Ettrick Forest. He remained there for ten years, during which time he began a lifelong friendship with his employer's son William Laidlaw (later the manager of Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford estate).In 1802 Laidlaw was instrumental in setting up a meeting in Ettrick between Hogg and Scott. A friendship developed that was to last until Scott's death in 1832.

Containing a frontipiece portrait of the author.


CONDITION

In a green cloth binding. Externally smart. Some light rubbing to the boards and some minor shelfwear to the spine. Some light bumping. Copperplate ink signature to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are uncut, and very bright and clean.
