Biography: Biography from Farrell Fischoff Gallery Barbara Erdman (American 1936- 2007)
Barbara Erdman was
born in New York City on January 30, 1936. As a teenager, she attended art
classes for three years at the Art Student''s League. She received her B.F.A.
from Cornell University. Subsequently she studied Chinese Calligraphy at the
Chinese Institute; classical stained glass with master guildsman, August Anni;
and tapestry weaving with Alice Adams.
During this time she also conducted a graphics workshop in her loft in New York
City, working with Red Grooms, Mimi Gross, and others in etching. She showed in
group shows with Grooms, Gross and Peter Passuntino and was invited into a show
at the 12th Street Phoenix Gallery. Then, for thirteen years Erdman lived in
Europe, primarily Florence and London, where she continued her work in oils and
pencil.
In 1977 she returned to the United States and settled in Santa Fe. Here she
continued her studies in photography. Some of her work was published in
"New Mexico Magazine", 'The New Mexican' and the 'Best Of Photography
Annual'. Erdman also edited a book of art photography by fifty-three
photographers, "NEW MEXICO, U.S.A." She was President of the Board of
the Santa Fe Center for Photography.
Erdman has been on the New Mexico Arts Division Panel, has curated and juried
shows in and out of the state, and has guest lectured at Austin College, Texas;
The Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe; The College of Santa Fe; the Society for
Photographic Education; and the Studio Arte Centro lnternazionale, Florence,
Italy.
Erdman has work in the permanent collections of I.B.M., The Museum of Fine
Arts, Santa Fe, The College of Santa Fe, as well as more than 25 major private
collections. She has participated in more than 50 juried or invitational group
shows. Her work has been exhibited in New York City; Santa Fe, Albuquerque,
Taos, Las Vegas and Farmington, New Mexico; Denver, Colorado; Dallas and San
Antonio, Texas; Washington, D.C.; and twice at the Academy of the Arts in
Easton, Md.Erdman has had eight solo shows including the Aspen Institute;
Austin College, Texas; Scottsdale Center for the Arts, Scottsdale, Arizona, the
American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C., and a a
solo exhibition of oil paintings and Plexiglas sculpture at Farrell Fischoff
Gallery in March-April 2005.
