A beautiful matched set of Sun Colored Amethyst (SCA) antique GLASS DOOR KNOBS.  These are MINIATURE SIZE to fit on a closet or interior door of a Victorian house.   The steel shaft is the same size as a standard door knob, it is just the glass knobs that are miniature and more delicate, to fit an interior door.  These are an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE set of blown-glass and brass door knobs, dating well over 100 years old.  They have a very distinct translucent amethyst hue IN the glass, NOT the FAKE PURPLE STAIN applied to the outside of the glass as some are.

You don't often see a matched set of these older shaped octagon (8 - sided) glass knobs, especially in this MINIATURE SIZE and in this EXCELLENT SOLID condition.  Usually when you see 'antique' glass door knobs, they are newer glass knobs which have a completely different pattern of glass and look.  They are machine-made of crystal-clear glass, and were factory made by the thousands in the post-WWII era of housing booms.  What is the best part about the set here is that they are SUN COLORED AMETHYST.  You hear about old glass turning purple in the sunlight ... the purple color is the result of having manganese in the glass.  Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass.   Then it was blown into a mold to create a functional glass object.   But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese starts to oxidize and slowly turns a lavender or amethyst color.   The end result is what collectors refer to as SCA (Sun Colored Amethyst) glass.   The longer it is in the sun the purpler it becomes.  A glass object has to be old enough to turn purple as with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 has manganese in it and will turn SCA.  With the beginning of WWI, manganese was no longer available as foreign imports deceased and domestic resources turned towards the war effort.  At that time selenium sulphate replaced manganese as a glass de-colorizer and when exposed to UV rays, it turns a yellow / straw color, and a dark burnt amber color.   Not only does this SCA give make this an attractive looking set of knobs but it also authenticates them as being true antiques.  Not only can this set of knobs be used as door knobs, in an old home, but they are multi-functioning, they can be used to decorate as well.   We have seen them used as coat hangers and also (don't underestimate this one) they are used as stick shift knobs on vintage cars and pick-trucks, nice!  Again, with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun colored amethyst.  Not only does this amethyst color make them a great looking set of door knobs but it also authenticates them as being truly antiquecheck it out!
