The images depicts a close shot of the youthful Faust (Gosta Ekman) embracing Gretchen (Camilla Horn). This unused "country of origin" postcard is in fine+ condition with what appears to be a lightly rusted outline of a paper clip on the top white border extending onto the image area, however, there is no indentation of a paperclip and the verso does not show any outline. There are no pinholes, tears, writing, or other flaws.
Director F.W. Murnau wanted Lillian Gish to play Gretchen, but she insisted that the film be shot by her favorite cinematographer, Charles Rosher. Murnau instead cast newcomer Camilla Horn, whom he had met on the set of Tartuffe, where she was a double for Lil Dagover. Leni Riefenstahl applied for the female lead role, but was turned down.
