DESCRIPTION

In 1881 "The Autobiography of Mark Rutherford, fictitiously ‘edited by his friend Reuben Shapcott’, appeared: White's first book at the age of fifty. Mark Rutherford's Deliverance followed in 1885, also edited by ‘Reuben Shapcott’. Behind this double pseudonymous hedge—which remained in place for all Hale White's fictional outings—he carefully spilt the beans about the chapel life and the narrow dissenting pietisms of his youth, and vented his satirical fury over what he perceived as the decline of the old nonconformist radicalisms into modern shallowness and hypocrisy" -ODNB.

William Hale White, 1831-1913, was an English writer and civil servant.

A rare original survival.
