Superb large Victorian Copeland Pottery Plaque bearing the signature of sought after ceramic artist, W. Yale. Entitled 'Winter' it portrays a thatched cottage in a snowy Winter landscape with a man in a hat on the other side of a stile. Very atmospheric. 42cm across (16.5 inches).
‘Tile and Slab Decorator' William (Billy) Yale was born in Newport, Shropshire in 1843. He was employed by Copeland from c.1869-83, where he was known for painting marine views and winter scenes. After he left Copeland, he set up his own studio in Stoke-on-Trent advertising himself as 'a Tile and Slab Decorator'. Working from a premises in Liverpool Road, Stoke-on-Trent he began painting ‘sagger ware’ plaques which he had acquired from other potteries and which he then fired in a kiln attached to his premises.
A number of his works are featured in Vega Wilkinson's Spode Copland-Spode The works and its People 1770 - 197- published by Antique Collector's Club Ltd. 2002
Condition is very good, there are a few tiny nibbles to the back of the rim, nor repair or damage.
