DESCRIPTION

The scarcer variant of the first edition with the press-figure '1' to the recto of M3 and '3' to the verso of M3.

Authorship is attributed to the 'author of Elfrida' which was Mason's first historical tragedy.

William Mason was an English divine, poet, author, editor and gardener.

Caractacus is a historical tragedy and was the basis of the libretti for an 18th century opera.


CONDITION

In a quarter calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear to the extremities and to the joints. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Loss to outer corner of final leaf, not affecting text. The odd spot throughout.
