In Order to Stabilize and Protect These Highly Porous and Natural Internal Growth Inclusions, Reduce Cracking/Splintering, Reduce Absorption From External Caustic Liquids, and Maintain a Very Long Lasting Durability, Most All Black Corals Are Typically Surface-Coated With Lacquer and Are Then Highly Polished to Seal-In These Internal and Normally Surface Visible Inclusions. This Protective Outer Coated Layer of Lacquer Produces a Smooth, Waxy to Vitreous Glass-Like Surface Polished Luster. When Black Coral Beads Are Rubbed Against Each Other, They Will Feel Slightly Tacky and Will Not Rub Away Smooth as With Pink, White, or Red Corals. This "Tacky" Trait Again Might Lead Consumers to Believe They Have a "Plastic-Made" or an Other Than Coral Product Due to the Combined "Light Weight and Waxy Feel", When They in Fact Are Holding Genuine Pieces of Black Coral Beads That Have Only Been Surface Lacquered. Pink, White, and Red Coral Varieties Are For the Most Part Internally Much More Heavier, and Densely Solid Due to Secreting Calcium Carbonate to Form a Hard External Skeleton. As such, These Coral Types Do Not Require Any Protective Coating. Pink, White, and Red Corals Typically Produce a Smooth, Slick Surface When Polished and Will Have a Marble-Like, Higher-Tone Clinking Sound When Tapped Into Each Other, Similar to Tapping On a Coffee Cup or Tapping Large Pearls. In Contrast, Tapping Black Coral Against Each Other Will Have More of a Lower-Tone Clunky Sound Due to High Concentration of Internal Pores. Third, Bead Shapes and Sizes: Although These Beads Have Been Calibrated, Polished, and Surface Lacquer Coated, Each Bead is Shaped Slightly Unique to the Very Next Bead, Very Similar to Round Cultured Pearls, No One Black Coral Bead is Exactly the Same as The Other. This is Clearly Observable Using a Jeweler's Loupe or Magnifying Glass as One Bead Might Appear Almost Perfectly Round While the One Next to it Might Have a Very Subtle Oval or Egg Shape. Aside From Shape, There Are Slight to Subtle Millimeter Width Differences in Each Bead. Hence, It Would Be Extremely Difficult to Reproduce Each of These Unique Shape and Size Combinations in a Plastic Mold or Any Other Mold as Many Thousands of Individual Molds Would Have to Be Created to Reproduce the Various Shape and Size Differences Seen In Just One Coral Necklace.
