Being offered on this auction is
beautiful boy figurine made by Konigliche Porzellan Manufaktur (KPM),
Berlin, Germany. It is Cancer (Crab) from Zodiac Signs. Legendary German
sculptor and modeler Friedrich Elias Meyer (1723 - 1785) designed this very
popular series for KPM in 1775. He created a number of models for the
Meißener Porzellanmanufaktur. However he really made his name when he
worked for KPM as a primary master modeler. He designed numerous porcelain
sculptures as well as Royal china service. He was a professor in the Royal
Prussian Academy of Arts and Sciences. Zodiacs remain one of the most
demanded from his figures. They reflect twelve signs as twelve months.
Mostly they are known in colored version. Figurine on this auction is Blanc
de Chine (all-white) – this is what KPM is the most famous of. Cancer is
the sixth figurine from the series. He represents a boy in jacket and hat.
He is holding a sunshade and a basket with fruits in his hands. This is
allegory of June. Gentle texture of porcelain beautifully represents
details of his body and dress. Cancer sign is engraved to his right side.
Sculpture stands on pedestal. It is fully glazed. Looks splendid. ‘Iunius’
is incised on pedestal behind this boy. The backside is marked with scepter
mark in blue under glaze. The scepter mark was introduced when Frederick
The Great bought the factory. This mark was used on production of during
1870 - 1945. This figurine is production of 1930s.
