This sixpence, known colloquially as the tanner, or half-shilling, was a genuine British pre-decimal coin. There is a well-known tradition of the bride wearing 'Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe.' A silver sixpence in the bride's shoe is a traditional good luck wedding gesture, a symbol of wishing her prosperity, love and happiness in her marriage. They were also used as a good luck charm by Royal Air Force aircrews in the 2nd world war.   Please see my E bay shop for hundreds of other items and dates of pendants and lucky sixpences, sixpence and farthing jewellery and key rings, halfpennies, pennies, halfcrowns, gift tags and favour boxes I have for sale on e bay for auction with no reserve.  Postage and packaging at a cost of only 99p.
