This is an acclaimed work detailing the Crimean War, fought between 1853 and 1856.
'The Invasion of the Crimea' is considered to be one of the great works on the subject.
Modern feeling is that the work is too favourable on Lord Ragland, and a bit too harsh and hostile to Napoleon III.

Written by Alexander William Kinglake, a noted English travel writer and historian, possibly best known for this, which is generally considered to be his magnum opus.
CONDITION
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities. Light discolouration to the spines. Some marks and some patches of rubbing to the boards and spines. Volume VIII with a paint mark to the tail of the front board and spine. Tidemark to the tail of the front board of Volume VIII, with a smaller one to the head of the rear board. Front hinge of Volume IV is a little strained but remains firm, the rear hinge is starting but firm. Front hinge of Volume V is strained but remains firm. Hinges of Volume VI are starting but firm. Hinges of Volumes VII and VIII are starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the rear endpaper of Volume I. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper of Volume IV. Institutional label to the front pastedowns of Volumes V, VI, VII, ánd VIII.T Tidemark to the pastedowns and endpapers of Volume VIII. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots and some marks. Page 299/300 of Volume I is detached but present. Tidemark to the head of the last few pages of Volume I. Dark tidemark to the margin of the first few pages of Volume I. Plate II of Volume II is detached but present. Two folding maps at the rear of Volume II are detached but present. Folding plate facing page 350 in Volume III with a repair to the reverse, with an additional leaf adhered. Foxing to the first and last few pages of Volume VI.
