'What Will He Do With It?' is a Victorian novel about Sophy, an angelic girl, and her grandfather. Sophy's grandfather is forced to make a living as an actor, and is made to put Sophy on the stage with him. One day a man sees Sophy and wishes to draw a portrait of her.

Written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton under the pseudonym Pisistratus Caxton. Bulwer-Lytton a writer and politician, known for his popular novels that coined many phrases, including 'the pen is mightier than the sword'. He was a Whig MP from 1821 to 1841, and a Conservative MP from 1851 and 1866.

Bookplate to the front pastedowns, 'William Orme Foster'. Foster was an English ironmaster, coalmaster, own owner of the industrial firm John Bradley & Co. He also served as a Liberal MP for South Staffordshire.


CONDITION

In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spines and to the extremities, resulting in some loss to the head of the spines of Volumes II, III, and IV. Cracks to the joints, with larger cracks to the rear joints. A little rubbing to the spines and extremities. Front hinge of Volume III is starting but firm. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
