The popular Shaw Brothers comedy The Warlord introduced audiences to the comedy genius of Michael Hui Koon Man, the man who would one day become Hong Kong's reigning box office king of comedy! Michael Hui is Pang Ta Fu, the bald ruler of Shantung appointed to the position after the Sino-Russian conflict. Saddled with a three-month drought, Pang challenges the gods...and wins! Now that his country is prosperous again, Pang's popularity soars, but that's not the end of his story. He has to deal with battfield skirmishes (some of which are decided by mahjongg), and the unfaithful ways of his many, many wives. He also loses the national treasury due to gambling, and tries to pay his soldiers by secretly raiding a treasure-filled tomb! Recalling Charlie Chaplin's work in The Great Dictator, Michael Hui creates a broadly funny, satirical portrait of a Chinese warlord who may - or may not - have been based on an actual Chinese official! Directed by Li Han Hsiang, who would also direct Michael Hui in the erotic comedy The Happiest Moment.

Synopsis :

Evoking Chaplin, he plays a warlord in early 20th Century China, but makes the role his own with both laughs and some of the sexest ladies on the Shaw Brothers lot.
