DESCRIPTION

This work inspired debate among sixteenth century theologians. This work offers evidence of Lively's breadth of scholarship, and his attitude towards Hebraic tradition of exegesis. In this work Lively analyses the seventy weeks in Daniel 9: 24-27 and seeks to understand if it is to merely be understood as a historical event, or if Daniel's weeks can be applied to the contemporary era.

It is in this work that Lively stresses the important contribution of non Christian writers such as Pliny, Horace and Herodotus in understanding The Bible.  He also uses the church fathers as a source for this work, and the writings of post-biblical Jewish exegetes, lexicographers, grammarians and historians.

The first and only edition of this work.

ESTC reference no: S108759.

Extremely scarce in commerce, with no other copies traced.

Collated, lacking F5, 2C7, and 2C8. Therefore, with the signatures A-E8, F4, F6-8, G-Q8, R2, S-2B8, 2C6.  R2 is blank as called for.

Edward Lively was a noted scholar and he played an active role in preparations for the King James Bible. Lively was also a Regius Professor of Hebrew at Trinity College, Cambridge. Lively's works are extant in manuscript, and he only wrote two books.

An important piece of Biblical scholarship, in both a religious and historical context.  Lively examines this particular excerpt from the perspective of several sources, which was truly distinctive at this time of writing.
