‘Darrow’ is a well-loved variety of blueberry known for its hardy habit, but most importantly for the enormous sweet tasting blueberries that appear! This delicious variety will produce these plump berries for you throughout August, where you can simply pick from the shrub and enjoy as a sweet snack or in pastry pies! The usual green foliage will surprise you from season to season, due to the pale pink blooms that decorate the greenery in spring and the colour changing properties of the foliage in autumn! A reliable hardy shrub for your patio or wildlife area – Loved by the pollinators!
Blueberries require a well drained, acid soil in a sunny or semi shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow blueberry plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3.
If possible, blueberries should be watered with rainwater because the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Blueberries will begin to produce fruit in their third year. As fruits begin to develop, cover the plants with netting to protect the berries from birds. From their third year, begin to prune out the oldest stems each autumn to promote new growth and maintain a healthy plant framework.
