The Goncourt Journal was a diary written by Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, from 1850 to Jules' death in 1870. The journal is a candid account of the literary and artistic scene in Paris in the mid nineteenth century.
Upon publication this work was met with critical acclaim, with critics describing it as an inimitable view into French literary society.
The Goncourt brothers were inseparable in life, both being naturalism writers, and collaborative writers throughout their lives. Their histories include 'La Femme au XVIIIe Siecle' and 'La du Barry'. They also wrote novels as a joined effort, including 'Germinie Lacerteux, which was based on the double life of their maid, Rose Malingre.
