Statis Pro Baseball Old Time All Stars, – New 4th Edition

(Printed Version)

Includes cardstock board, new FAC, Charts, rules and card set.

Introduction

You want complete games?  You want .400 hitters?  You want guys who played in Buffalo, Louisville, the American Association and Negro Leagues?  Here you go.

384 of the best pre-expansion players and Negro Leaguers are included here, as well as 16 ballparks from the golden age of baseball.  Player seasons were generally selected by WAR (Wins Above Replacement) which considers offense, defense and baserunning.  Due to the paucity statistics and the scheduling of barnstorming games during their regular seasons, Negro Leaguers were created using their career statistics playing only against legitimate Negro Major League teams (mostly 1920 onward), high minor league teams and major league teams.

Who is eligible?

All seasons from 1888 (modern baseball rules) onward were considered, although a few earlier seasons were included as a few Hall of Fame players had no post 1888 seasons worthy of inclusion.  The heavily depleted World War II seasons (1943-1945) were generally avoided although not entirely.

How were the cards created?

The vast amount of play-by-play data we are used to today are not available for the majority of seasons covered in this set.  Even basic statistics like Stolen Bases, Walks, Sacrifice Hits are missing from some of the 19th Century and Negro League campaigns.

Baserunning and Fielding ratings use more subjective and reputational sources (SABR Biography project, MLB Negro League profiles, National Baseball Hall of Fame) than my normal seasons would rely on, but often that was the best available information.  Those sources coupled with available statistics from Baseball Reference, Baseball Gauge and Seamheads Negro League Database provide a reasonable basis for the player ratings presented.

Card formulas

The variability of seasons from 1888 to 1960 is vast, as one can imagine, and the rapidity of change from season to season could be whiplash inducing.  From 1903 to 1904 the NL batting average dropped 20 points, from 1930 to 1931 the drop was 27 points.  From 1892 to 1894 the home run rate doubled.  Taking this into consideration, every season was individually rated rather than try to consolidate them into “eras”.  This was the only way to really make dead ball era batters and 1920s pitcher’s able to compete on an equal footing as their raw statistics do not compare favorably with “normal” seasons.  A few examples of formula constants are below.

Year       1b           K             W           XBH*

1892N   11.0          5.4        5.6            6.2

1894N   13.1          3.3        5.9            9.3

1908N   11.3          6.1        4.5            5.5

1930N   12.6          5.1        5.0          10.5

1946A    10.8          7.1        6.0            7.9

1960A    10.4          8.2        5.6            8.4

1978A    10.9          7.7        5.0            8.4

2017M    9.4        13.9        5.2          10.7

*XBH is used to calculate BD numbers.  A 1908 hitter will get a considerable boost relative to a 1930 hitter.

The normal means of determining PB Ratings (using isolated power SLG-BA) were used when reliable batting against pitcher statistics were available (generally the late 1920s onward).  Otherwise ERA+ was used as the base line for the pitcher’s rating.

 (see roster below)

WHY THIS VERSION OF STATIS PRO?

From the creator of Statis Pro Advanced comes the first revision for the original Avalon Hill Baseball game since the game went out of print in the early 90s.  Why could this be the Statis Pro Baseball game for you?  Game strategy and accuracy has been improved dramatically with only a single page of rules and charts to amend the original game.  You’ll be up and playing this improved Statis Pro in a matter of minutes.

1.      Accuracy of results:  Let’s not kid ourselves, Statis Pro is fun, but the Pitcher Card “Rulebook Formula” used for the original cards is daft and highly inaccurate.  Pitchers in the Revised Edition will replicate their real life batting average, on-base and slugging percentage allowed.  You can have a 2-6 ace, and a 2-8 bum.   Batter and Pitcher cards are normalized to their league so teams can compete realistically across eras.  Balk, Wild Pitch and Passed Ball results are also now based on actual results.

2.      Half Results:  Many players in SP have less than one chance for HRs, HBP, 3b8.  These players now have a “half-a-chance” to produce these results.  Also players who are incredibly difficult to K, or pitchers who walk very few batters have a special rating to match their real life results.

3.      Platoon Advantage:  A simple platoon advantage system that modifies PB: draws adds another level of strategy and accuracy without the added complexity of double column LH/RH splits and encourages intuitive and realistic player use.  Players are rated from -3 (extremely poor) to +3 (huge advantage).

4.      Park Effects:  Going into Coors Field?  Very likely your pitcher’s “Stuff” could be Bad, but they may get a boost in Dodger Stadium.

5.      New Charts:  A new Steal chart set up just like the original takes into account the steal percentage of baserunners as well as the hold ability of the pitcher.  New CD chart eliminates “No Results”, makes defense more important of a consideration in your lineup.  Defensive ratings, including Arms, are based on the most modern stats available.  The Hit and Run Chart remains in the same style but the batters batting average is now taken into consideration.  No more turning that .180 hitting 2Bman into a .400 hitting menace with a runner on 1st.

6.      Pitching Strategies and Platoon modifications are also on the chart.

7.      Card design:  Cards are larger (business cards) and laid out in an easier read format which includes team colors, league leaders, awards and all the important stats you’ll need to make decisions.

8.      You can use these revisions with any Statis Pro card set.

9.      A large and growing Facebook community sharing tips, modifications and game results.
