Circa 1896 Ivan Saltykov 84 Silver Cigarette Case Russian Federation Central Bank Commemorative!

Definitely a UNIQUE piece of Russian silver and most likely RARE!

Emperor Alexander II established a State Bank by decree in 1860 for promoting "the revival of trade turnover and the resilience of the monetary system." Initially, the Bank of Russia was mainly engaged in short term commercial lending. In 1864 premium bonds were issued on behalf of the State Bank, revenues of which were partially used to build railroads.

Popular with the Imperial Russian workshops, silversmith Ivan Saltykov was well known for his outstanding silver-works. His creations of value included cigarette cases and snuff boxes.

What better silversmith than Ivan Saltykov to create a commemorative cigarette case documenting the Russian State Bank success of achieving 200,000 (bond or ruble?) through their internal premium bonds.

This wonderful approximate 3¼" x 2¼" x ¾" case is engraved with a facsimile of a 100 silver ruble internal premium bond on the top. The bottom is engraved with 200,000. I am not sure whether this is the number of bonds issued or ruble raised. Under this figure on the right is the hallmarks signifying its creation by Ivan Saltykov (active 18841897). The assay mark indicates 1882-1899 and the Moscow mark indicates after 1896. Together, these indicate a creation of circa 1896. The top is also hallmarked on the upper right boarder of the bond. Interesting to note - each of the pieces (top & bottom) have matching Roman numerals "scratched" on their inside. This suggests identification to match the two pieces (bottom and top) to each other. Other than speculation, I do not know why.
