The History of the Syracuse - Onondaga Pottery Company
The company now known as Syracuse China was founded in 1871 as the Onondaga Pottery Company (O.P. Co.) in Geddes, New York (now part of Syracuse). It was named after the county in which it was located. On July 20, 1871, sixteen local businessmen purchases the struggling pottery for $50,000. The pottery industry was not new to Geddes. It's roots were planted in 1841 when W.H. Farrar arrived from Vermont to establish a small pottery for making salt-glazed stoneware. Farrar moved his pottery closer to Erie Canal in 1857. In 1868 he sold the business to a group who formed the Empire Crockery Manufacturing Company. It was managed by an English potter, Lyman Clark. When Onondaga Pottery took over, it gained the building, it's stock & Clark. O.P. Co. was located far from New Jersey & Ohio centers of ceramic manufacturing, so supplies were transported on the canal & railroads. At first the company back-stamped its ware with the English Lion & Unicorn Arms. In 1873 it dropped it's reference to England & adopted the Great Seal of the State of New York to mark the improvements in it's Iron-stone ware. When Clark left, another English potter, Richard Pass, took his place as Superintendent. In 1884 Elmer Walter established the Boston China Decorating Works. In 1885, Richard's son, James Pass, joined O.P. Co. as Superintendent, later becoming President. In 1888 he developed America's first truly vitreous China body. In 1895, the name "Syracuse China" appeared in the back-stamp. The company continued to produce the earth ware body until 1897, when it was discontinued. Following James Pass's death in 1913, Bert Salisbury became President & led O.P. Co.. In 1926 the research labs created a color clay body known as "OLD IVORY & in 1931 they created "ADOBE" in a tan color. Manufacturing of fine China continued until 1970 at which time it ceased, the plant was torn down & all production moved. In April 1978, shareholders of Syracuse China Corporation voted to merge with Canadian Pacific Investments, Ltd. The company expanded by acquiring the "Mayer China Company" in 1984 & "Shenango Pottery" on 1988. In 1989 Canadian Pacific put Syracuse China Company on the market. The Susquehanna - Pfaltzgraff Company of New York, Pennsylvania, out bid more than twenty investors for the highly regarded pottery. By the early 1990's The Syracuse China Company closed both Pennsylvania plants & made the ware of all three companies at its Syracuse plant. In 1995, Libby Inc of Toledo, Ohio purchased the Syracuse China Company.
