Cable Assembly

The live and neutral are each insulated and the earth wire is bare. The overall bundle of wires is insulated in a grey PVC outer casing. The 1.0mm² to 2.5mm² cables have a solid copper conductive wire construction, the 4mm² to 16mm² have a multiple core construction, (ie. - there are multiple copper cores making up the 4mm² live, and neutral wire) 

Twin and Earth Cable, Common Cable Uses
For general purpose installation in dry or damp premises on walls, boards or trays, in channels or embedded in plaster when an earth continuity conductor is required.

1.0mm² is usually used for lighting circuits.
1.5mm² is most commonly used for lighting and various switches.
2.5mm² is usually used for socket wiring, plugs and ring mains wiring.
4.0mm² is usually used for Radial Socket Circuits.
6.0mm² is usually used for light duty cookers and showers.
10.0mm² is usually used for higher load cookers and showers.
16.0mm² is usually used on light commercial uses and consumer units.
