DESCRIPTION

The International Exhibition of 1862 was a world's fair hosted in South Kensington, London, between the first of May and the first of November of that year. The building was situated where the Natural History and Science Museums are now located, and the materials with which it was built were later used during construction work on Alexandra Palace.

Items displayed here included the first plastic, all manner of machinery and tools, the electric telegraph, submarine cables, cotton miles, furniture and porcelain. Particularly of note were the production of ice by an early refrigerator and William Morris's decorative pieces.

The Queen did not attend as she was in mourning for her late husband, Prince Albert; however, stereoscopic photographers produced a 3D record of the exhibition which was delivered to her.

With illustrations throughout the text of the various items on display at this exciting exhibition, which signalled a new era in design, industry and technology.
