In 1988 in Cheyenne, WY, I bought several large wooden crates full of antique baby bottles. They had been stored in a barn there & had gone through two floods, some still had flood water in them. The lady told me that they had originally come from the “Roedel Drug Store” that was still in operation there in Cheyenne.

I went to the drug store & talked to the pharmacist, Andy Roedel, He told me that his grandfather, Andrew Roedel came from the mining town, Leadville, CO in 1899 & started the drug store in Cheyenne, & it had been in operation since then. The drug store closed in 2007 (you can read about it on the internet.)

I told Andy that I had bought several wooden crates of the baby bottles & other medicine bottles, & asked him if he could help me date them. He was very kind & went out into the parking lot to look at the bottles in the back of my truck. He told me his grandfather bought these bottles by the railroad car full. Andrew's son was also a pharmacist & took over the business, his name was Andrew also, & now the grandson Andrew the third had it.

Andy told me that when they moved from the original location to the present one in the 1960s, they gave crates & crates of these bottles away. He told me that the baby bottles were from the early 1900s, probably around 1910. I believe he was correct, because I found an old advertisement in one of my old McCall's magazines dated January 1919. I am including a copy of the advertisement with each baby bottle I sell. Read the advertisement it is so interesting, & tells why these bottles were dangerous to use.

I worked several hours trying to clean the bottles that had flood water standing in them. Some of the bottles might still have a stain from the flood water, but they are as clean as I could get them. They have a diamond embossed on the bottom. The Illinois Glass company had a diamond (1900-1916), so I believe that they were made by the Illinois Glass Company.

I have been an avid collector of antiques & collectibles for several years. I am now getting ready to start selling some of my collections so that my children won't have that job after I am gone. My collections are postcards, old magazines, old books, sheet music, old valentines & other paper goods, 78 records, jewelry, ladies compacts, perfume bottles, head vases, other ladies items, old linens, old dolls, kitchen utensils & wares, tins, bottles & other glass wear, figurines, old prints, primitives, and about everything except money & stamps. I have been collecting for over 50 years, I am now 80 years old and don't move too fast, so I am slow at getting things listed, but if you check back occasionally you might find something you might be interested in.
