DESCRIPTION

The first edition of this vanishingly scarce work.

In a signed binding by R. H. Porter.

An interesting essay regarding the libellous attacks published in the 'Birmingham Journal' against the Assay Office.

The Birmingham Assay Office began in 1773, as the silver industry in the city had been hampered by the legal requirement of items of solid silver to be assayed, being hindered by the fact that the nearest offices were in Chester and London. Thus an Act of Parliament was passed to allow them to open the office in Birmingham.

By George Richmond Collis.

Newspaper clippings of Collis' contributions to the endpapers, five in total all dated 1846. They all regard this work, or letters regarding the original attacks.

Stamp of the Assay Office Library, Birmingham, to the recto to the front endpaper.
