It's usually forgotten among his repeated calls for someone to get him a new horse, but Shakespeare gives the villainous Richard III an apt summation of his own life near the end of the play of the same name: "I have set my life upon a cast, and I will stand the hazard of the die." Five centuries on, and it's uncanny how anyone who has ever rolled a d20 or any other combination of dice in a tabletop roleplaying game knows exactly what he meant! When you come down to it, Richard III did indeed roll a critical failure at Bosworth Field.
