Kiri-bako
(paulownia wood box) is a box made of paulownia wood. It is mainly used for
storing hanging scrolls, antiques, wind chimes, prayer beads, etc. It is
usually divided into a box and a lid.
It is usually divided into a box and a lid, and the lid is fixed to some extent by the friction between the box and the lid when it is put on, and is often covered with a string or wrapped with a furoshiki. Most paulownia boxes for hanging scrolls have a bearing inside, and antiques are sometimes wrapped in fukusa (wrapping cloth) or yellow bags before being placed in the paulownia box. In the case of antiques, they are sometimes wrapped in fukusa or yellow bags before being placed in the box.
In the world of tea ceremony utensils, the value of the box is sometimes enhanced by writing on it. Because paulownia does not smear ink, it is often used for calligraphy by Iemoto (the head of a school) and for writing on boxes for artists.
Kyoto is the main production center for the famous high-grade boxes.
It
is also used in ceramics, lacquer ware, and other gift items.
Recently, paulownia has also been used for packaging high-grade muskmelons.
