A unique, Large , colourful   Asafo Flag from the Fante people of Ghana , featuring the Ghana Tri colour flag.

An Authentic 1970's Flag, showing great signs of usage, but still in a great vintage condition

Made from thick cotton.

174 cm /  69 "  X  113 cm / 45"

These flags are visual representations of military organisations in the Fante Communities known as "Asafo".

Asafo= “ War People”

The Asafo or "companies" each have their own flag name and number.

Every flag has a message /story to tell from the images displayed on the flag.

The Proverb represented by this flag is ; "If a child wants to pick ripe pepper, let him do it. When it gets in his eyes,

he will stop himself"

The British flag was used until 1957, since then the flag of Ghana is often substituted. The reverse side is

appliquéd with the same image, usually matching very closely, less so with letterings.

The Flags were used during the installation of a new Asafo Captain , during festivals , funerals of a

company’s member and during other traditional events.

The imagery on the flags asserts the wealth and power of the company and explicitly challenges rival

groups. Often the design alludes to proverbs, reflecting the importance of proverbs throughout Akan

culture.

A finely made 1970's flag.

This flag is in an excellent vintage condition.

Great as a wall hanging.

A highly collectable piece of African Art .
