What Is Bias Binding?
Bias binding is a trimming that is usually used for enclosing raw edges but can also be used as a ribbon for adding decorative embellishments. Bias binding is a ribbon of fabric that has been cut at a 45 degree angle to the grain of the fabric which makes it stronger, more able to stretch and more flexible than fabric which has been cut on the grain. The edges of this fabric ribbon are then pressed under. This is called a single fold bias binding where only the edges are pressed (whereas a double fold bias binding would also be pressed in half at the centre). To use it to enclose raw fabric edges, simply fold the bias binding in half around the edge of the fabric. Stitching in place then attaches the front and back folds around the raw edge, sealing it inside. Bias binding width is the width it is sent out as (flat with the edges folded under). So a 15mm (0.6 inch) bias binding like this, can be used like a ribbon which is 15mm (0.6 inch) wide, but when used to enclose a raw edge, it will fold down to be 7.5mm (0.3 inch) visible at the front of the fabric, and 7.5mm (0.3 inch) visible at the back of the fabric.
