DESCRIPTION

The very scarce first edition of this work from German lexicographer Johann Gottfried Flügel, present here in the original binding and complete in two volumes.

In 1824 Flugel was appointed lector of the English language in the University of Leipzig. This is his best known work, and at the time had an extensive circulation not only in Germany but in England and America.

With title pages to each volume in both English and German, this work contains 'all the word in general use' in each language, presented in alphabetical order.

With the armorial bookplate of 'Cranstoun of Corehouse' to the front pastedown. George Cranstoun, Lord Corehouse was a Scottish advocate, judge and satirist.


CONDITION

In thepublisher's original quarter cloth binding, with paper covered boards. Losses to perimeters of paper spine label to volume II. Bumping to spine head and tail, with small split to front joint at head of volume I and tail of rear joint to volume II. Tidemark to front board of volume I. Starting to front and rear joint of both volumes, with boards holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Tidemark to first few leaves of volume I. Pages otherwise generally clean and bright.
