This type of garage door normally has rollers running vertically on the door posts and a large spring across the top of the door, hence why canopy doors are also referred to as vertically tracked doors.
When fully open, the door does not retract all the way into the garage but leaves a section creating a canopy in front of the garage.
These doors do NOT have horizontal runners into the garage.
This type of garage door normally runs horizontally on a track along the roof of your garage, hence why retractable doors are also referred to as horizontally tracked doors.
Usually large springs can be seen on both sides of the door.
When fully open the door usually retracts all the way inside the garage.
Although retractable doors are usually contained inside the garage space when opened, some may extend beyond the door opening, similarly to the way a canopy type door does.
In this case, another way to distinguish between Canopy and Retractable type doors is to identify the placement of the door's springs.
If the spring is above the door, it is a canopy type door.
If the springs are beside the door, it is a retractable type door.
Swing type garage doors (also known as side-hinged) swing outward during opening and usually do NOT restrict space inside the garage itself compared to other types of doors.
This type of design is more commonly found in smaller sized garage doors.
Swing type garage doors are capable of automation with the help of a wing arm adapter.
This type of garage door is normally made up of a number of horizontal sections which slide up and over in to the garage, hence why these are referred to as sectional type doors.
This type of design is more commonly found in larger sized garage doors.
Sectional doors do NOT "swing out" while opening like other types of garage door.
