Tempered glass is a type of glass in which mechanical stresses are specifically generated in the material through heat treatment
and thereby the fracture resistance to mechanical or thermal stress is increased.

The finished glass workpiece is heated in an oven and then quickly cooled.
This quenching solidifies the surface and the external dimensions of the component change only comparatively little.
However, the warmer core continues to contract even more, since thermal expansion is significantly higher above the transformation point than below.
This creates a permanent stress field in the component: a sphere is thus prestressed both radially and tangentially,
A plate is under compressive stress on its surfaces, while a neutral fiber runs in the middle under tensile stress.

Due to this frozen prestress, the tempered glass can compensate significantly higher tensile loads than untreated glass.
Since the compressive strength of glass significantly exceeds the tensile strength, this represents an overall improvement.
However, a workpiece treated in this way can no longer be cut non-destructively as is possible with untreated glass,
