The playhouse is the central building on the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin's Mitte district. The classical building is one of the main works of the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It was opened in 1821 as the Royal Playhouse, was the Prussian State Theater from 1919 to 1945, suffered severe damage in World War II and was reopened in 1984 after reconstruction and conversions. In accordance with its now fundamentally changed use, it was given the name Konzerthaus Berlin in 1994.
