This print is based on a CNT-FAI poster from the Spanish Civil War, fought from 1936 to 1939. Republicans loyal to the left-leaning Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic, in alliance with anarchists, of the communist and syndicalist variety, fought against an insurrection by the Nationalists, an alliance of Falangists ( fascists), monarchists, conservatives and traditionalists, led by a military group among whom General Francisco Franco soon achieved a preponderant role.
The Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (English: National Confederation of Labour; CNT) is a Spanish confederation of anarcho-syndicalist labor unions. The FAI - The Iberian Anarchist Federation is a Spanish organization of anarchist militants active within affinity groups in the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo anarcho-syndicalist union. It is often abbreviated as CNT-FAI because of the close relationship between the two organizations.
