Fennel
is a majestic herb with attractive feathery ferny foliage, so can be grown for
its looks or as a vegetable (using the bulb and stem). With a delicate aniseed
flavour, the foliage of this hardy perennial makes a tasty addition to salads
or an attractive garnish. Although Fennel is a short-lived perennial, it is
usually grown as an annual. Height: 180cm (71"). Spread: 45cm (18").
The Kew
Pollinators range of seeds from Thompson and Morgan has been specially created
alongside the experts at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to attract and support a
wide range of pollinators, including bees, butterflies and beetles, as well as
a number of other important pollinating insects. Helping these pollinators to
thrive is hugely important for our eco-system as a whole and these seeds, in
their striking packaging inspired by artwork from the Kew archives, will help
to create the environment which they need to thrive, with varieties chosen to
help a wide range of pollinating insects, including some night flowering plants
to help moths which also play an important part in our gardens.
Direct
sow fennels seeds outdoors from March to July into well prepared soil in full
sun when temperatures reach around 13-18C (55-64F). Sow seeds thinly into
drills 1cm (½") deep and 38cm (15") apart. When fennel seedlings are
large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm (12") apart. Make regular
sowings for a successional harvest.
