The seeds will require 8 to 10
weeks of cold stratification in order to germinate. This can
be achieved if you direct sow the seeds in the garden in the fall, or if you
store the seeds in the refrigerator before planting them in indoor starter
trays six to eight weeks before the last spring frost.
If starting indoors, (after the refrigeration stratification period) plant the seeds in small pots or starter trays filled with standard potting mix. Moisten the mix, then plant the seeds in groups of three to five seeds, just barely covering them with additional potting mix. Place the containers in a spot that receives morning sun and where nighttime temps remain above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the potting mix moist until the seeds sprout, which usually takes two to four weeks.
Keep the seedlings moist as they grow in a sunny location until it's time to transplant them outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. New seedlings may need protection from feeding rabbits for the first year. When planted from seeds, Liatris usually does not bloom until the second or even third year.
Floristan White Blazing Star
Floristan White
Blazing Star is an herbaceous
perennial with a rigidly upright and towering form. It
brings an extremely fine and delicate texture to the garden composition and
should be used to full effect.
This
plant will require occasional maintenance and up-keep, and is best cleaned up
in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It is a good
choice for attracting butterflies to your yard, but is not particularly
attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats.
Widely
grown as a commercial cut flower, this is selected from one of our native
prairie wildflowers. Plants form a low clump of grassy looking leaves, bearing
tall spikes of clean white flowers beginning in midsummer. Very useful in the
sunny border or meadow garden, or in containers. Clumps may be easily divided
every 3 to 4 years in the spring. Beautiful in combination with the purple
forms.

Floristan
White Blazing Star will grow to be about 18-32 inches tall with the flowers,
with a spread of 18 inches. It grows at a fast rate, and under ideal conditions
can be expected to live for approximately 10 years. As an herbaceous perennial,
this plant will usually die back to the crown each winter, and will regrow from
the base each spring. Be careful not to disturb the crown in late winter when
it may not be readily seen!
This
plant should only be grown in full sunlight. It is very adaptable to both dry
and moist locations, and should do just fine under typical garden conditions.
It is considered to be drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for a
low-water garden or xeriscape application. It is not particular as to soil
type, but has a definite preference for acidic soils, and is subject to
chlorosis (yellowing) of the foliage in alkaline soils. It is somewhat tolerant
of urban pollution.
Plants will also readily self-sow if you don’t cut the flower
stalks back in the fall. Blazing stars are rarely troubled by insects or
diseases, but the foliage can succumb to powdery mildew, especially in hot,
humid weather. The problem can minimized by growing plants in full sun and
providing ample space between them to improve air circulation.

Due to the nature of our products, seed germination rates may
vary depending on storage and growth conditions. Some varieties have a
naturally low germination rate, at around 50%. When a variety has a lower
germination rate, it is usually indicated on the packet and we endeavor to
provide more seeds to compensate. The vast majority of our seeds have
germination rates of over 85%. We work hard to provide you with the best
service possible.
