VICTOR VASARELY
The Hungarian craftsman, painter and theoretician who was experimenting with "Op Art" effects as early as 1948, Vasarely suffused the static geometry of Bauhaus tradition with a new life partly derived from Hungarian folklore and partly from his fascination with the pure physics of light and color.  At home in such diverse media as the monumental scale ceramic mural and tapestry, Vasarely is primarily a designer of paintings and graphics.  He was born in Pecs, Hungary in 1908, and studied at the Budapest Bauhaus.  He lived in France.  Among the numerous collections which include his work at the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Gallery, London and the Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris.
