Free Appreciation Society Magazine - Issue #164

November 2022

Brand new issue of the long running fanzine dealing with all things 'FREE'. This magazine continues the 50th anniversary issues that run through the full history of the group, greatly expanding the work that was done by David Clayton and Todd Smith in the book, 'Heavy Load - The Story Of Free' in 1999. This is the first of a 3-issue production dealing specifically with this period, July - December 1971.

We step back a little here initially, to June 1971, and everything that happened there, before moving forward from the fragmentation of Free in Japan and Australia, during April and May 1971. Then the story begins moving on to the formulation of the three splinter groups, KKTR, Peace & Toby. Lots of new information and material here, especially around the activities of Paul Kossoff, who was quite busy during this initial couple of months. There's a comprehensive look and the 'coming and goings'. Tetsu arriving from Japan, Rabbit's journey from Texas, via Sweden, to the Basing Street Studios, and who the mysterious singing  'Rick' was.

There's an in depth look at the start of solo recordings, and John Martyn's 'May You Never' sessions, with Kossoff, Kirke & Tetsu, that spawned the 'Time Away' instrumental piece.

All this comes headed with a brand new introduction, written especially by Simon Kirke for this issue, dealing specifically with this period of new freedoms from the old regime, and the gathering storm caused by the break-up that would eventually destroy the group forever.

This issue checks in at 56 colour pages and covers quite a bit of stuff I've never included, or written about before, not even in 'Heavy Load'. There are two addendums in this new issue, and they will be coming to the FAS 'blogspot' in a couple of days. So be sure to go and check them out when you reach them in the text.

A hugely comprehensive issue. Enjoy!

The Free Appreciation Society is one of the most respected and longest running of all the independent fanzines. Since 1979 it has continued to review and support the careers of all the Free related artists with fair and balanced critique through its subscription based magazine.

This magazine is run and written by fans of the band for fans of the band and it deals with Paul Kossoff, Paul Rodgers, Andy Fraser & Simon Kirke throughout their different groupings in all eras.

It also runs features and reviews on all the sisters and brothers of the Free unit. Back Street Crawler, Crawler, Bad Company, Sharks, The Law are all featured, as are the individuals that made up those bands and others, John Rabbit Bundrick, Terry Slesser, Snuffy Walden, et all.

The magazines breadth and depth is its strength and it has also featured Cry Of Love, Gov’t Mule, Black Crowes and a variety of other acts who name Free as an influence. The magazine is a wealth of knowledge and information if you like this type of blues based Rock.
