Writing in honor of Carl Schurz (1829 –1906), the German-American statesman, reformer, soldier, and journalist, President Hoover released this stirring tribute to Schurz:

One of the most useful contributions to American life in the last century was the addition to our population of large bodies of political exiles from Europe following the famous ’liberal revolutions iof1848.’ The largest of these groups came from Germany, and of this contingent no one more highly distinguished himself in the service of his adopted country than Carl Schurz … he made a name for himself honored because of his patriotism, pure political motives, and exceptional talent. He gave himself without reserve to his allegiance to this country, because he found here all that he had dreamed to create for himself and others in Europe, namely, a political and social order in which every individual is free and upon an equality of opportunity with every other, where merit may rise unhampered to the highest level … The career of Carl Schurz deserves to be remembered … as an example of what high character can achieve … and of what opportunities our democracy offers to those who give themselves sincerely and unreservedly to its service.
