Large birch bark barrette with a porcupine quill CHICKADEE  This is on a traditional birch bark medallion and is by by Paul St John, Mohawk craftsman. The chickadee of natural white with solid black dyed quills  is on an oval birch bark medallion with an inner border of natural white quills with darker ends left on.  The Chickadee sits on a green dyed quill evergreen branch.  Around the medallion's exterior is an border of tidal sweetgrass.   This is traditional quill on birch bark work innovatively made into a barrette.   (A similar necklace w/large round birchbark medallion featuring a similar chickadee may be in this eBay store - if not yet sold)  


The chickadee is of of solid black dyed quills and natural undyed white quills.  The plump chickadee sits on an evergreen branch of dyed brown and dyed green quills.

Paul St. John lives in Maine near his mother's family.   His mother is Passamaquoddy, Maliseet and MicMac.  He grew up on the Mohawk lands in New York, his father's homeland and is an enrolled Mohawk tribal member.
